Supermarine Spitfire Mk.I and Mk.II — the twenty-sixth volume of the Wingleader Photo Archive photographic series, a special edition on the early Spitfires by Richard Alexander.
Responsibility details are not available.
This is a photographic publication for modelers and aviation historians, not a kit. The twenty-sixth volume of the numbered Photo Archive series of the British publisher Wingleader is a special edition devoted to Spitfire Mk.Is and Mk.IIs and was written by Richard Alexander. The volume is identified unambiguously by the publisher, the series and the number: Wingleader Photo Archive 26. Check the title and the subject on the box before you buy.
The Spitfire Mk.I and Mk.II are the early versions with a single-stage supercharged Rolls-Royce Merlin engine and with eight machine guns in the wing. During 1940 they changed quite literally from one production batch to the next: a bulletproof windscreen and an armored headrest were added, the wooden two-blade propeller gave way to a three-blade one with variable-pitch blades and finally to an all-metal constant-speed one, the cockpit canopy was given a domed shape and the Mk.II came with a more powerful Merlin XII and a cartridge starter. It is exactly these small things that decide whether a model matches a particular machine and date, and a photographic volume is the most reliable reference for them. The publisher states that this special edition follows on from its older volume on the Mk.I, which ended with the Battle of Britain, and that it arranges the material by production batches rather than chronologically.
For modelers who build the early Spitfires and need evidence about a particular machine — the propeller, the cockpit canopy, the armament and the markings. It will appeal to readers interested in the development of the Spitfire in the first year of the war as well.
