The real subject

The PWS-A was a fighter biplane built under license by the Polish Podlaska Wytwórnia Samolotów — hence the abbreviation PWS. Its pattern was the Czechoslovak Avia BH-33, which the Poles took over with small modifications; they received one sample machine directly from Czechoslovakia. Between 1929 and 1932 fifty units were built and the type entered the armament of the Polish Air Force in 1930. It was a single-seat strut-braced biplane with a radial engine, fixed landing gear and a pair of machine guns, that is a machine fully in the spirit of the end of the 1920s: good agility, but a structure that the times quickly outgrew. In service it was replaced relatively soon by the PZL P.7 parasol fighters, and so at the time of the German attack on Poland the PWS-A was long out of the front line. For the Polish Air Force it nevertheless had great significance: it was one of the last license-built fighters of the Polish Air Force before the arrival of the domestic PZL high-wing machines.

Building and painting tips

As with every biplane, geometry decides: seat the upper wing on the struts only after the joints of the fuselage have fully dried, so that the cabane does not pull to one side. The bracing wires can be replaced with thin filament stretched once it has dried. Gloss varnish under the decals, matte at the end.
