About product

T-33A Shooting Star in 1:72

An unassembled injection-molded plastic kit from Kovozavody Prostejov. The T-33A is a trainer: two seats in tandem, dual controls, no camera. The reconnaissance RT-33A is a different version and a different purpose. Kovozavody Prostejov is a Czech brand that in the 1970s and 1980s was among the European giants of plastic modeling. Check the specific schemes and their number on the box.

The real subject

When the US Air Force moved over to jet machines, it lacked an aircraft on which pilots could learn to handle them. The solution was straightforward: in August 1947 they took the airframe of the P-80C fighter, lengthened it by 38.5 inches and built a second seat with dual controls in under the longer canopy. The engine, the wing, the landing gear and most of the systems stayed the same, so instructor and pupil alike worked with a machine that behaves like a combat fighter. The prototype first flew on March 22, 1948 and production ran right up to 1959. The power was the Allison J33-A-35 turbojet. 6,557 machines of all versions came off the lines; besides Lockheed they were built by the Canadian Canadair as the CT-133 Silver Star and by the Japanese Kawasaki under license.

Building and painting tips

Build the cockpit first and do not rush it: on a two-seat trainer both seats and both instrument panels are visible through the long canopy. Mask the canopy before spraying and keep it clear. Machines in bare metal need a smooth gloss base and then a metallic finish; prominent yellow or red bands come out best sprayed through a mask.

Who the model is for

  • collectors of jet trainers in 1:72
  • anyone interested in the US Air Force of the fifties
  • modelers who want to build a machine in a bare metal finish

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
