About product

DRAMi: Kpz 70, German-American main battle tank prototype, 1:35

The kit captures the German version of the jointly developed tank, that is the machine designated Kpz 70. The American side ran it as the MBT-70. This is a plastic kit of an armored vehicle; the DRAMi brand makes kits from molds taken over from Dragon. The scale is 1:35. The manufacturer's part number is not stated here.

The real subject

The United States and West Germany signed a development agreement in August 1963. It was to yield a tank replacing both the American M60 and the German Leopard, and the project rested on a number of bold solutions: a hydropneumatic suspension with which the crew both lowered and raised the hull, a three-man crew, and a driver seated in the turret in a counter-rotating cupola that could be turned so that he faced forward even while the turret traversed. The main armament was a 152 mm gun from which a guided missile could also be fired, and a retractable 20 mm cannon complemented it. The German version had an engine of fifteen hundred horsepower and weighed over fifty tons. The costs of the project grew, the technical solutions could not be mastered, and in April 1969 Germany announced that it would build its own tank. The cooperation ended in January 1970 and Congress canceled the simplified American version in December 1971.

Building and painting tips

Finish the running gear and the inside of the hull before closing it, and with a tank that has a hydropneumatic suspension decide in advance at what height you will set the hull. The prototype did not carry combat weathering, so a clean coat, a fine wash into the engraved lines and a light dusting of the lower parts will suffice.

Who the model is for

  • collectors of prototypes and unrealized projects
  • modelers of Cold War era equipment
  • builds for a display case alongside the Leopard
  • builders with experience of a conventional plastic kit

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not part of the package, unless stated otherwise.
