Modelling rubber is a flexible square-section rubber profile, stocked in 3 × 3 and 4 × 4 mm and sold by the metre. It earns its place wherever you need elastic tension or a little damping: clamping plywood parts while the glue cures, holding a removable wing in position, mounting an undercarriage so it gives under a landing, or sitting as a cushion between two parts that must not rub against each other.
Rubber will not take ordinary modelling cement. For a joint, use cyanoacrylate on a degreased surface, or better still thread the rubber mechanically through a hole and knot it, which holds far more reliably than any glue. When cutting, stretch the profile and take the blade through in one pass, otherwise the edge frays. For fixed, non-elastic lines and rigging, carry on to rope and thread, and for structural members to the wooden profiles.
