Thinners & Cleaners

The right thinner decides the outcome of a spray session as much as the paint does. Too thick and the surface goes grainy, too thin and it runs, and the wrong solvent will curdle the pigment into flakes in the cup before anything reaches the model. The products here are sorted by the paint they belong to, from acrylic media through enamel and lacquer solvents to odourless spirit for oil work, and the shelf also covers airbrush cleaners, degreasers and brush soaps.

There is no universal thinner

Every binder wants its own solvent. Acrylics take water or an acrylic medium, enamels white spirit or a dedicated enamel thinner, lacquer ranges their own lacquer thinner. Getting it wrong usually shows as pigment flocculating into visible flakes. If you are not sure what type a bottle is, check its category in model paints before mixing anything into it.

What is on this shelf

Thinners for spraying

Some thinners include a retarder that stops paint drying on the needle, which is worth having in a warm dry room and whenever fine transitions are being sprayed with airbrush equipment.

Airbrush cleaners

A cleaner is more aggressive than a thinner and exists to dissolve dried residue. Flush after every colour, not only at the end of a session: dried paint in the needle channel will ruin the next model's finish.

Degreasers and brush care

Before spraying, mould release and finger grease have to come off the surface. For brush maintenance there are soaps that wash pigment out of the ferrule and bring the point back, and they belong next to your model paint brushes.

Matching the thinner to the paint

  • Acrylic model paints and enamel model paints: what you paint with decides what you thin with.
  • Oil paints for modelling, where odourless spirit is used less for thinning than for wiping excess away.
  • Modelling chemicals: retarders, flat bases and other additives that change how paint behaves on purpose.
  • Model varnishes, which are thinned just as carefully as paint, except that a mistake shows more on gloss.
  • Glass or metal mixing jars with a lid, since a strong solvent will soften a thin plastic container over time.

Before any colour goes on, an even ground from surfacers and primers saves more paint than careful thinning ever will.
