About product

Vallejo Airbrush Thinner - thinner for the airbrush (32 ml)

Airbrush Thinner from the manufacturer Vallejo is a thinner for acrylic modeling paints, intended above all for spraying with an airbrush. It is not a paint and it is not a kit either: the bottle holds a clear liquid with no pigment which on its own colors nothing and covers nothing. Its job is to reduce the density of the paint so that it passes through the airbrush nozzle and lays down in a thin, even coat. The manufacturer states that it thins the paint without any loss of adhesion or durability of the coat, increases its flow and slightly extends the drying time.

Use

  • Thinning denser acrylics (typically the Model Color range, which is formulated for the brush) to a consistency suitable for the airbrush.
  • Further thinning of the airbrush ranges (Model Air, Game Air, Metal Color) when you need a finer and more translucent spray.
  • Thinning for the brush, if you want a glaze-like coat that blends smoothly.
  • The manufacturer recommends thinning paint by roughly up to 25 percent for the airbrush and up to 50 percent for the brush.
  • The relation is direct: the more you thin, the lower the coverage and saturation, because heavily thinned paint needs more coats.

Thinner or Flow Improver? They are not interchangeable

This is the most common confusion in the whole category. Airbrush Thinner changes the density of the paint: it thins it and thereby inevitably weakens its coverage as well. Airbrush Flow Improver from the Vallejo range does something different: the manufacturer states explicitly that it is not intended to turn brush paints into sprayable ones. It improves the flow of the paint and slows its drying on the needle and in the nozzle, so it limits clogging of the airbrush in the middle of work, while leaving the coverage practically unchanged. If your paint will not spray because it is dense, you need a thinner. If your nozzle dries up and the spray breaks up during work, you need a flow improver. Experienced modelers use both side by side.

Who it is for

For everyone who sprays Vallejo acrylic paints with an airbrush, from figure painters to builders of aircraft and vehicles. A basic consumable used in the workshop with practically every spraying session.

A water thinnable acrylic product. Work in a ventilated space, use respiratory protection when spraying and keep out of the reach of children. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions and safety data on the packaging.

FAQ

It is not. It is a clear thinner with no pigment, so it will neither color nor cover anything. It serves only to thin an acrylic paint before spraying or brushing.

A thinner reduces the density of the paint so that it passes through the nozzle, but in doing so it also reduces the coverage and saturation. Flow Improver, by contrast, is not intended to make paint sprayable: it improves the flow and slows the drying of the paint on the needle and in the nozzle, so it prevents the airbrush clogging, while leaving the coverage practically unchanged. They solve two different problems and complement each other well.

Water will thin the paint, but it also upsets the proportion of binder, so the coat then holds worse and tends to be more brittle. The thinner is formulated to reduce the density without loss of adhesion and durability, which tells when spraying.

For Vallejo acrylic modeling paints, both the denser Model Color brush range and the Model Air, Game Air and Metal Color airbrush ranges.
