What the thinner is for

Premium Color Reducer is a thinner meant for thinning the paints of the same range. A thinner is not the same as water: besides lowering the consistency it keeps the binder in balance, so that once thinned the paint does not go grainy, does not form strings in the nozzle and keeps its gloss and its opacity. Correctly thinned paint spreads into a thinner and more even coat, does not flood the raised detail and makes it far easier to build a smooth transition between shades.

When to reach for it

Most often before work with an airbrush, because paint from the bottle tends to be too thick for a fine nozzle. It also suits anywhere the paint has thickened with standing, and anywhere you need a translucent glaze for toning, shading or evening out shades. The thinner is added gradually and the paint is always stirred between additions so that it is clear where the consistency has moved.

Recommended procedure

• Shake both the paint and the thinner before mixing.
• Dose the thinner a drop at a time into a cup or into the airbrush reservoir, never into the storage bottle with the paint.
• Judge the consistency by the way the mix runs down the wall of the vessel, not by eye.
• Mix only as much paint as you will use straight away.
• Use it with paints of the same range; different chemical bases may curdle.
• Close the bottle carefully after use and store it away from frost and direct sunlight.
