An injection-molded plastic kit of the American carrier dive bomber Curtiss SB2C-3 Helldiver in 1:72 scale. The mold is from 2012 and, according to the manufacturer, photo-etched dive brakes and a newly rendered propeller belong to it. In the same scale the manufacturer also keeps the later SB2C-4 version. Check the extent of the package on the packaging.
The Helldiver was to replace the proven Dauntless and carried its bomb in an enclosed bomb bay, which was a new feature on a carrier dive bomber. Its development was protracted, however, and the machine earned an unflattering nickname among its crews. The SB2C-3 version is the one on which the characteristics improved: it received the more powerful Wright R-2600-20 Twin Cyclone engine of 1900 horsepower, that is an air-cooled two-row radial fourteen-cylinder, and with it a four-blade Curtiss Electric propeller. On late machines of this version perforated dive brakes appeared, which reduced the buffeting during a dive. It was precisely in this form that the Helldiver took part in the heaviest raids on the Japanese naval formations in 1944.
Glue the photo-etched dive brakes with cyanoacrylate and straighten them on a hard surface before gluing. Paint the interior of the cabin and the bomb bay before you glue the fuselage together. The dark blue coat of carrier machines is enlivened by lighter oversprays of the surfaces and a fine emphasis of the panel seams; apply the decals onto a gloss coat and cover them with a matte one. Fit the propeller only at the very end, so that it does not break off during work.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not part of the package, unless stated otherwise.
