About product

Lancia Beta Montecarlo Turbo Short Tail 1:24, Heller

A plastic kit of a circuit racer in the large 1:24 scale. The main purchasing distinction stands right in the name: Short Tail, that is the short rear. The manufacturer also keeps the same car in the version with the longer tail under a different number, so check which one you are building. The package holds one decal option, a faithful engine, hoods that can be built both open and closed, and auxiliary headlights. The finished model measures 183 mm in length. The mold is the original one and the manufacturer reworked and repolished it for this release.

The real subject

The Lancia Beta Montecarlo Turbo was a Group 5 circuit racer, that is the category that allowed manufacturers to intervene in the body as long as the silhouette remained recognizable. Lancia took advantage of that and built the car in two aerodynamic forms. The short tail was a departure from the elongated shapes typical of endurance racing: shortening the rear part improved throttle response, the behavior of the car and grip in corners, but aerodynamics at high speeds were paid for in exchange. The short tail therefore makes a different car, not merely a differently looking one.

Building and painting tips

Lay the paint in thin coats and onto a perfectly smoothed base; on a racing car the gloss is half the result. Apply the extensive sponsor decals onto a gloss coat and help yourself with a decal softener so that they settle into the transitions of the body. Finish the engine bay before you close the hood, and decide in advance whether you will build it open. Glue the auxiliary headlights on at the end, as they are the most fragile.

Who the model is for

  • collectors of Group 5 circuit racers
  • those interested in Italian motorsport of the turn of the 1970s and 1980s
  • modelers who want an exposed engine
  • those who enjoy working on a gloss finish and decals

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not part of the package, unless stated otherwise.
