About product

Yokosuka D4Y3 Judy with rockets in 1:72

An unassembled injection-molded plastic kit from AZ model, the manufacturer's part number AZP7213. The distinction is the engine: the D4Y3 is the radial version, whereas the D4Y1 and D4Y2 carried a liquid-cooled inline engine, so they have a different nose and a different cowling outline. AZ model is a Czech brand that shares an owner with Kovozavody Prostejov. Check the extent of the markings and of the rocket parts on the box and in the instructions.

The real subject

The Japanese Yokosuka D4Y Suisei, called Judy by the Allies, was a carrier dive bomber built around a liquid-cooled inline engine — that gave it a slim nose and high speed, but unreliability plagued it. The D4Y3 Model 33 version solved this radically: it received the radial Mitsubishi Kinsei 62 of 1,164 kW, that is about 1,560 horsepower. The wider engine worsened the pilot's view when landing on the deck, but according to the assessment of the time the gain in reliability was worth it. Sources give the maximum speed as 574 km/h at an altitude of 6,050 meters. No reconnaissance version of the D4Y3 came about; that role was taken over by the more powerful Nakajima C6N1. Late machines received three solid-fuel rocket boosters: they helped with takeoff from smaller carriers and could also be used to accelerate in the final phase of an attack.

Building and painting tips

The radial cowling is the main area on view: paint the cylinders and the exhausts before you close the cowling. Glue the boosters on only after the fuselage has been sprayed. Japanese carrier machines wore dark green on top and light gray below; spray the transition freehand, not through a mask.

Who the model is for

  • anyone interested in Japanese carrier aviation of the Second World War
  • collectors who want the radial version alongside the inline one
  • modelers of dive bombers in 1:72

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
