Boulton Paul Defiant — the fifth volume of the Airframe Detail technical series from Valiant Wings Publishing, a specialist publication on the RAF fighter with a gun turret.
Responsibility details are not available.
This is a specialist publication for modelers, not a kit. The fifth volume of the numbered Airframe Detail technical series of the British publishing house Valiant Wings Publishing was written by Richard A. Franks and devoted to the fighter with a gun turret. For this volume the publisher also states drawings in 1:48 scale.
The Boulton Paul Defiant was a fighter in which the whole armament, four machine guns, was carried by a turret behind the pilot; the machine had no forward-firing guns at all. Over Dunkirk it enjoyed a brief success, because German crews mistook it for a Hurricane and attacked from behind. Once the opponent saw through the tactic the losses were heavy and the type disappeared from daylight combat. It served well as a night fighter in the winter of 1940 and 1941, when it was among the most successful machines of the night squadrons, and ended its days as a target tug and an air-sea rescue aircraft.
For modelers who build the Defiant and need reference for the turret, the cockpit, the engine installation and the differences between the day and the night form. It will appeal to anyone interested in the concept of a turret fighter as well.
