A tool for scribing lines parallel to the edge of a part, from DSPIAE. The carbide scribing pin is set to a fixed distance and that distance holds along the whole length.
Responsibility details are not available.
The tool solves one of the hardest things to manage on a model: a line that has to be exactly parallel to the edge of a part. Freehand it will not come off even with a ruler, because the hand turns slightly during the stroke. Here the scribing pin is held by a pair of guide rails and the distance from the edge is set with locking wheels, so it stays the same from the beginning of the stroke to the end.
Set the distance and how far the pin projects first and try a stroke on an offcut rather than straight on the model. Scribe in repeated light strokes and keep the tool pressed firmly against the guide edge while doing so; as soon as it comes away from it, the line veers off and putting it right is practically impossible. Sweep the removed material away with a brush as you go.
The scribing pin is of a hard and therefore brittle material; sideways levering will break it. Replacement pins are sold separately, so it pays to keep one in reserve.
The model, paints and offcuts to practice on are not included in the package.
The tool makes most sense on aircraft and ship paneling, where long straight lines are at stake. On vehicles, where the joints are short and irregular, it comes into play less and an ordinary scriber with a ruler will often do.
It makes sense to keep replacement pins in reserve. A pin usually breaks in the middle of a run of paneling, and without a spare the work has to be put off.
