It also serves as a pin with which two small parts are pinned together when they would not hold on a glued joint alone.
Solid metal keeps its shape even in a thin section, whereas a plastic part of the same diameter sags during handling alone. Brass can also be polished to a metallic shine, so some details stay frankly metal and need no painting at all.
