Consolidated Liberator G.R. Variants in RAF Coastal Command and RCAF Service — the thirtieth volume of the Wingleader Photo Archive series on the patrol Liberators that closed the gap in the air cover of the Atlantic convoys.
Responsibility details are not available.
This is a photographic publication for modelers and aviation historians, not a kit. The thirtieth volume of the numbered Photo Archive series of the British publisher Wingleader keeps, according to the box, to the patrol versions with RAF Coastal Command and with the Royal Canadian Air Force. The bomber and transport Liberators have a title of their own in the same series, Consolidated Liberator Part 2 - RAF and RCAF Bomber and Transport Variants.
The abbreviation G.R. stands for General Reconnaissance, that is a long-range patrol and anti-submarine machine — not a bomber. The Liberator was the key aircraft for this work, because it alone had enough range to cover the so-called black hole in the mid-Atlantic, which air cover of the convoys could not reach from either shore. The patrol machines carried radar for finding surface targets, depth charges, strengthened armament in the nose, and some of them a searchlight for night attacks on surfaced submarines. The use of these aircraft is among the reasons why the Battle of the Atlantic turned in favor of the Allies in 1943.
For modelers who build a patrol Liberator and need evidence on the radars, the armament and the white anti-submarine camouflage. It will appeal to readers interested in the Battle of the Atlantic as well.
