A hand tool the size of a thick pen whose head neither swings sideways nor turns, but moves with a short straight stroke. That is exactly the difference against a rotary tool: a reciprocating movement does not hollow out a dish in the plastic and leaves no circular marks, so it can be used on a flat surface and on an edge as well. The tool runs on a built-in battery and charges through a common port, so no separate adapter is needed.
Guide the tool without pressure and let the abrasive head do the work, not your hand. Added pressure slows the stroke down and the material melts instead of being sanded. On thin walls work in short touches and keep checking the thickness against the light, because an electric tool takes material off far faster than a hand-held stick and breaking through a wall is a matter of a moment.
Do not breathe in the dust from plastic and resin; work with extraction or at least in a well-ventilated room and with respiratory protection. Do not charge the battery with fast chargers intended for phones.
The tool does not replace hand sanding completely. For the final smoothing before the paint a fine hand-held stick or paper remains better, because even on its lowest setting an electric tool takes material off faster than is wanted in finishing work. A reciprocating sander saves time mainly where there is a lot of material: on filler, on resin parts and on large surfaces.
