A photographic publication from the publisher Wingleader, volume number 46 of the Photo Archive series, 72 pages, in English, by the author Neil Robinson. It is not a kit. The volume follows the Swordfish from its introduction into service in 1936 through the whole of World War II and, according to the publisher, gives particular attention to colors and insignia and corrects errors that appear with the type in kits, for instance with the landing lights.
The Swordfish was a fabric-covered biplane that was meant to be obsolete already at the start of the war and yet survived the whole of it. Slow and in no way agile, but able to deliver a torpedo, bombs, depth charges and rockets accurately to the target, and above all able to take off from and land on a short deck even in conditions that would not let faster types leave an aircraft carrier. From the decks of escort carriers it then served in the anti-submarine fight until the end of the war. Its colors and insignia changed several times over that span.
The book is for a modeler who is building the Swordfish and needs reliable reference for the colors and markings of a particular period, and for a reader interested in the Fleet Air Arm of the Royal Navy. It also suits anyone who wants to compare the pre-war machines with the wartime ones. Do not look for technical drawings in a picture archive, as its core is a photograph with a caption.
