Open-cell foam polystyrene, 20 mm from Green Stuff World: a board for carving rocks and terrain.
Responsibility details are not available.
A board of foam polystyrene with an open cell structure, twenty millimeters thick and measuring two hundred by three hundred millimeters. It differs from the usual blue insulating foam in being less dense and in having a low memory, so that it keeps the shape wherever you dig a tool into it or press a texture into it. Twenty millimeters is a versatile thickness: it is enough for rock steps and terrain undulations while the board can still be cut comfortably by hand.
The board is cut with a sharp knife or a hot wire, and the shape is then fine-tuned by scribing and breaking pieces off, which gives a rock a natural fracture. When building a hill it pays to glue several layers on top of one another and only then to shape the whole, because a tall formation will not come out of a single board. The surface has to be sealed with a protective coat before painting, or the foam will soak the paint up. Solvent-based paints and sprays dissolve foam polystyrene, which is why water-thinnable products are the ones for it. The manufacturer gives seventy-five degrees as the highest safe working temperature.
For builders of dioramas and gaming surfaces, for modelers who shape their own landscape, and for anyone who needs a light material for bulk.
The dust that arises while cutting and sanding is dangerous, so work with respiratory protection and in a ventilated space. Store the material out of the reach of children and away from sources of heat.
