Cowl flaps of the Fw 190 D-9 engine cowling in the open position, 1:48 scale. From Quickboost, in a shape that matches the real subject, for the MiniArt kit.

Quickboost brings the flaps of the annular cowling of the long-nosed Focke-Wulf Fw 190 D-9 in a shape that matches the real subject, and opened out. It is a modification of one assembly on a model on the bench, not an aircraft in its own right; the maker intends it for the MiniArt kit.
Behind the ring on the nose of the Dora there is no radial unit but the radiator of the liquid-cooled Jumo 213. The flaps around its circumference regulated the airflow: the pilot opened them when running on the ground, while climbing and in hot weather, and closed them in fast flight. The open position therefore suits a machine standing on its hardstand, an engine being run up, or a takeoff from a muddy airfield in the spring of 1945. That is exactly how most machines waiting for the signal to start are caught in period photographs, which is why the open position is so rewarding for a diorama.
The space behind the flaps is visible when they are opened out, so give it a dark shading and suggest the depth of the radiator. Match the outer rim to the shade of the nose and hide the boundary with a light overspray. On the real subject the edges chipped down to bare metal, which can be suggested with a silver pencil applied really sparingly.
