Closed engine cowling cooling flaps for the Focke-Wulf Fw 190 D-9, 1:48 scale. From Quickboost, for a model in flight configuration.
Responsibility details are not available.
Quickboost supplies the flaps on the Fw 190 D-9's cowling ring with the correct shape, this time in the position lying flush against the cowling. It suits an aircraft depicted in flight or with a cold engine. You build the base model yourself.
The switch from a radial engine to the inline Jumo 213 presented the designers with the question of where to put the radiator. The solution was a ring at the very front, which from the outside resembles a radial engine cowling but hides the cooling core inside. The flaps around its circumference closed up in fast flight to reduce drag. A Dora with the flaps closed represents the typical view of the aircraft in level flight, as seen in period photographs from the final months of the fighting. The flush position is therefore also a natural choice for a model displayed on a stand in a flying pose.
The closed position simplifies the work: just match the shade to the nose and lightly suggest the parting lines with a thin dark wash. Do not overdo them — on the real aircraft these are narrow seams, not deep grooves. Add a touch of soot behind the exhausts, or the nose will look sterile, and highlight the ring's edge with paint chipping down to bare metal.
The package does not include paints or glue.
