The PT-MPS parts separator from DSPIAE serves for separating fitted parts and for taking glued assemblies apart. The steel blade slides out and hides away again at a single press.

An assembled model sometimes needs to be taken apart: a seat has to come out for painting, a cowling has to come off because of the engine, or it has simply turned out that a fitted part sits the wrong way round. Pushing a knife into the joint is a risk for the part and for your fingers. This tool has its blade shaped so that it slides into the joint and spreads it open instead of cutting into it.
The blade is of stainless steel and is hidden in a body of plastic. It slides out and retracts by a mechanism operated with a single press, so the tool needs no separate case and endangers nothing in a drawer. The polished surface of the blade clogs less with remains of paint and glue.
It will be appreciated by builders of robot kits and modern kits, where parts are held on pins and taking them apart is counted on, but also by modelers who repair older assembled models. For a seam joint glued firmly through, though, this is not the tool; there only cutting it open will help.
Before the work it pays to look the joint over against the light and find the place where the gap is widest. The blade slides in most easily there and the part opens up without a dent on a visible surface.
The blade is sharp. Always pry away from yourself, support the part and do not use the tool as a screwdriver, so that the blade does not break off.
