About product

The McDonnell Douglas DC-9-41 in 1:144 scale from AMP

A kit of the DC-9 airliner in the series 40 version in 1:144 scale, that is in the standard in which the great majority of civil aircraft are collected. AMP has long devoted itself to less usual civil and special types that the big makers pass by, and the DC-9-41 is one of them. The exact contents of the package, the number of parts and the range of marking options are not stated here.

The real subject

The DC-9 is a twin-engine jet airliner with its engines mounted on the sides of the rear fuselage and the horizontal tail carried at the top of the fin. That configuration freed the wing of engine nacelles and allowed a low-set fuselage, thanks to which the aircraft managed without boarding bridges - which made it a favorite machine on shorter routes and at less equipped airports. The series 40 is stretched compared with the original versions, so it takes more passengers while keeping the cabin with five seats in a row. It is exactly the slender long fuselage and the characteristic rear-mounted engines that make the DC-9-41 a very recognizable model in a small scale.

Building and painting tips

Civil aircraft in 1:144 stand or fall on the quality of the surface, because a gloss finish reveals every joint. Fill the fuselage joints carefully, sand them with fine paper and polish the surface. Apply a gloss varnish before the decals - a flat base causes silvering. Consider in advance how much weight will be needed in the forward fuselage for the model to stand on its nose gear; on aircraft with rear-mounted engines the center of gravity is set back. Mask the clear parts of the cockpit and the windows and paint them together with the fuselage. Airline color schemes tend to be made up of a combination of glossy areas and crisp lines, so it pays to work with masking tapes and spray in layers from the lighter color to the darker.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of civil airliners in the uniform 1:144 scale.
  • Modelers who enjoy a gloss finish and precise masking.
  • Anyone interested in classic jets with engines in the rear fuselage.
  • Builders looking for a type outside the usual range of the big makers.

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The series 40 has a fuselage stretched compared with the older versions, so it takes more passengers. The cabin layout with five seats in a row stays, which is also why the aircraft is described as five-abreast. Exact dimensions and capacities are not stated here.

On aircraft with engines in the rear fuselage the center of gravity is set back, so it is worth weighting the nose before the fuselage is glued together. Estimate the weight needed by trying it with the fuselage unglued.

The range and content of the decals is not stated here. Go by the information on the box and by the enclosed instructions.

In shape it is a fairly simple model, but the finish is demanding - a gloss coat and decals forgive nothing. For a patient beginner it is a good chance to practice polishing and masking.
