The real subject

The P-51 Mustang is an American single-seat fighter of the Second World War. In the large 1:24 scale the model comes out as a substantial piece for the display case, and the viewer notices even small things on it. On a standing aircraft the landing gear wheels are among the first things to catch the eye, because they are low down, close to the viewer and cannot be hidden by anything.

What the set contains

These are replacement wheels intended for a model of the P-51 Mustang in 1:24 scale. They go on in place of the wheels from the kit and are often the reason for taking the model on at all, because on a finished set both the tire tread and the shape of the hub are visible. The number of pieces in the package, and whether a tail wheel is included, are given in the manufacturer's instructions. The parts are not polystyrene, so ordinary modeling cement does not work on them and the joint is made with cyanoacrylate glue.

Building and painting tips

• Cut the surplus material off with a sharp blade a little away from the part and sand the rest back smooth.
• Before painting, wash the parts in lukewarm soapy water and let them dry.
• Apply a primer, otherwise the paint will not hold well on the smooth surface.
• Paint the tire and the hub separately and mask the join with thin tape or with a circular mask.
• Do not make the tire black; dark gray looks truer in scale.
• Fit the wheels only after the landing gear has been painted, otherwise you will not reach them with a brush.
