About product

Hughes TH-55A Osage in 1:32 scale from AMP

A kit of the light TH-55A Osage training helicopter in 1:32 scale. AMP is building a coherent range of small helicopters in this scale, so the model fits in well among other small machines of the same size. For helicopters 1:32 is a pleasant compromise: on such a small subject it gives the model a reasonable size while still allowing the frame structure and the cabin to be rendered. The exact contents of the box, the part count and the range of decal options are not stated here.

The real subject

The TH-55A Osage is the military designation of a light helicopter derived from the civilian range of light machines from Hughes. It is a two-seat machine with a piston engine, a bubble-shaped glazed cabin, an open truss tail boom carrying the tail rotor and skid landing gear. The structure is simple and rugged, which made it a machine used for basic flight training over a long period. For a modeler it is interesting above all for the contrast between the smooth glazed front end and the exposed structure at the back, where the arrangement of tubes, rods and the drive shaft is visible.

Building and painting tips

The cabin will take the most work: the glazing is large, so the interior will be clearly visible and it pays to spend time on it, including the seats, the controls and the instrument panel. Do not glue the clear parts with ordinary cement for plastic - use a cement intended for clear parts or a thin super glue away from the visible areas. Mask the glazing before painting and uncover it right at the end. The open truss tail boom is best painted before it is joined to the fuselage, because it is harder to reach afterwards. Leave the rotor blades separate and attach them only after painting; balancing the assembly is easier if you stand the machine on its skids on a flat surface and check that it does not rock.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of helicopters in 1:32 scale.
  • Anyone interested in training and light machines outside the mainstream.
  • Modelers who enjoy working on glazing and a cabin interior.
  • Builders looking for a smaller project with a striking result.

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is a light two-seat helicopter with a piston engine, used for basic flight training. Its simple and rugged structure was an advantage in school service.

The subject itself is a very small machine, so even in 1:32 scale the model comes out compact. The scale does, however, allow the cabin and the truss structure of the tail to be rendered decently.

Do not use ordinary cement for plastic, whose fumes damage clear material. Reach for a cement intended for clear parts or apply a minimum of super glue away from the visible area.

The exact contents of the box, the part count and the range of decals are not stated here. Check them on the packaging of the kit.
