About product

Turned pitot tube for the MiG-21 F-13 in 1:48 scale

The set contains a turned metal pitot tube complemented by a resin adaptor that secures its seating in the nose of the model. It is intended for the MiG-21 F-13 kit, that is the version designated by the reporting name Fishbed C, in the version from Eduard. It is not a kit but a replacement for one of the most exposed plastic parts of the whole model.

Why change the plastic tube for a metal one

The pitot tube is thin, long and sticks out from the model into space. In injection-molded plastic it cannot be made thin and straight at the same time, so the part from the box tends to be thicker than the scale would suggest, and often slightly bent because it warped in the sprue. On top of that it has a mold parting line along its whole length that has to be cleaned up, but sanding a round profile produces an oval. A turned metal part is concentric, straight and has the correct slenderness. Above all, though, it stands up to handling of the finished model, whereas the plastic equivalent breaks off at the first careless touch.

Fitting and painting tips

Cut the plastic part off and clean the hole in the nose out, opening it up carefully with a drill to the diameter of the adaptor if need be. Seat the adaptor dry and check that the tube points along the axis of the machine, as any deviation is immediately visible from the front. It is glued with cyanoacrylate or with epoxy, which gives you time to align it. Degrease the metal with alcohol before painting and use a primer intended for metal surfaces. Anyone who does not want to paint at all can simply polish the metal surface and darken it with a blackening solution. We recommend gluing the tube on at the very end of the build, otherwise you will inevitably catch it during the rest of the work.

Who the accessory is for

  • Builders of the MiG-21 F-13 in 1:48 scale from the Eduard kit.
  • Modelers whose plastic pitot tube has already broken once.
  • Those who want the exact axis and slenderness of a part that cannot be made in plastic.
  • Builders combining turned metal parts with photo-etched sets.

This is an accessory for a model. The model, paints and glue are not included in the package.

FAQ

It is not. It is a metal accessory that replaces the plastic pitot tube. The model has to be obtained separately.

It makes it possible to seat the metal tube in the nose of the model so that it sits on the axis and has enough contact area for the glue.

Cyanoacrylate, or epoxy. Cement for plastic will not bond metal.

Best of all as the very last step of the build. Even though it is metal and durable, you will keep catching it during the rest of the work on the model.
