About product

Turned metal air intake ring for the MiG-21 F-13 in 1:48 scale

The accessory replaces the leading lip of the circular air intake in the nose of a model of the MiG-21 in the F-13 version, that is the reporting name Fishbed C. It is intended for the kit from Eduard. It is not a kit but a single turned part that changes the most conspicuous place on the whole model.

Why metal precisely here

The leading edge of the air intake is knife-sharp on the real machine. In a kit it is made up of two fuselage halves, so a parting seam runs across it that has to be filled and sanded back. But when a circular lip is sanded, the circle is never kept perfectly, and the edge rounds off and thickens. A turned ring solves both at once. It is made from one piece, so it is perfectly circular, and its edge is as thin as could never be produced in plastic. On top of that it stands up to handling and the unnecessary knocks that the front of a model usually cannot avoid during the build.

Fitting and painting tips

First shorten the plastic lip of the intake by exactly the thickness of the ring and keep trying it dry until the ring seats without any step. The transition between metal and plastic is best leveled with a thicker cyanoacrylate, which works as a filler at the same time. Degrease the metal with alcohol, otherwise paint will not hold on it, and use a primer for metal surfaces. It is best to have the inside of the duct painted in advance, as you will not reach in there once the ring is glued on. Anyone building the machine in natural metal can simply polish the ring and leave it unpainted, and the transition to the surroundings can then be unified with a varnish.

Who the accessory is for

  • Builders of the MiG-21 F-13 in 1:48 from the Eduard kit.
  • Modelers who do not want to wrestle with a seam and filler on the lip of the air intake.
  • Those who are building the machine in natural metal and want to use the sheen of the turned surface.
  • Builders who can spot a rounded, thick leading edge on a finished model.

This is an accessory for a model. The model, paints and glue are not included in the package.

FAQ

It replaces its leading lip, that is the ring at the mouth. The duct itself stays as it comes from the kit.

Yes, the lip has to be shortened so that the ring seats flush. You will find the exact amount by trying it dry.

It does not. The manufacturer makes separate rings for other versions of the MiG-21; this variant is for the F-13.

It does not. When building the machine in natural metal it can simply be polished. If you do paint, degrease the surface and use a primer for metal.
