A resin accessory for a model of the MiG-29A fighter in 1:48 scale. According to its name it holds dispensers of decoys, that is of chaff and flares, together with intake covers marked with the abbreviation FOD. The Quickboost line from the maker Aires builds on a simple exchange: you cut the plastic part off and glue the resin one on, and nothing else is rebuilt.
Chaff and flare dispensers are a passive element of the self-defense of an aircraft – they fire chaff against radar guidance and pyrotechnic flares against infrared. On the real machine they are cassettes recessed into the skin, whose grille and spacing belong among the details that injected plastic usually only suggests by engraving. The intake covers are fitted onto the air intakes of a parked aircraft, so that the engine does not draw a foreign object in; on a model they say clearly that the machine is standing on the flight line.
First wash the resin castings in lukewarm soapy water, so that the release agent from the mold disappears, as paint does not hold under it. Sand the area under the dispensers flat first and remove the original engraving, or the new part will stand on an edge. Because of the thin profile of the casting, work with the file sensitively and try the fit dry until the part seats with no gap. It is bonded with super glue applied with a needle, so that it does not run into the surroundings. The dispensers usually differ in color from the skin – it pays to spray them separately and add them to the model only after the main paintwork and the decals.
The accessory is supplied unpainted, as resin castings. Glue, paints and the base kit are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
