Injection-molded plastic kit of the Soviet MiG-29 in the early production version designated 9-12 in 1:48 scale from Great Wall Hobby, a modern Chinese brand that reviewers have long ranked at the top for accuracy of tooling and fineness of engraved detail. In the box you will find gray plastic on several sprues, a clear sprue for the canopy, a photo-etched fret (among other things for the ejection seat) and generous decals with three schemes for Soviet and Russian machines plus complete technical stencils for the airframe and the weapons. A full combat load is included: short-range and medium-range guided missiles (R-60, R-73, R-27) and drop tanks. The flaps, ailerons, slats and rudders are separate, so the model can be built in a lively pose.
The MiG-29 is a twin-engine lightweight frontline fighter of the fourth generation that entered service in the mid-1980s. It became famous for its exceptional agility in maneuvering combat and for its ability to operate from unpaved and improvised surfaces: during the take-off run and on landing the main intakes are closed by doors against ingesting foreign objects, and the engines breathe through louvers on the upper side of the wing root extensions. The 9-12 is the early production form, with a slim spine behind the cockpit. The later 9-13 received a markedly bulged spine (nicknamed the fatback) with an additional fuel tank and an active jammer, and it is precisely by the profile of the spine that the two versions are told apart at a glance. It is also a Czechoslovak subject: Czechoslovakia took delivery of the MiG-29 in 1989 (twenty machines including two-seat trainers), after the split of the country the Czech Republic and Slovakia divided them in half, and the Czech Fulcrums were exchanged with Poland for helicopters in 1995. The Slovak MiG-29s flew until 2022.
The kit is for more experienced modelers because of its scope rather than its difficulty; it fits well, but there are many parts. Glue with liquid (capillary) cement for plastic and finish and paint the cockpit and the landing gear bays first. Apply primer before painting and spray the camouflage with an airbrush; the typical scheme is two-tone gray with soft transitions. Prepare the canopy for careful masking; put a gloss coat under the decals and unify the surface with a matte one once it has dried. Deep green interiors and a fine paneliner in the engraved lines will give the model depth.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
