About product

Heinkel He 46 in 1:72 scale from RS models

A kit of the Heinkel He 46 reconnaissance and observation aircraft in 1:72 scale from the Czech brand RS models. The product name adds a suffix after the type designation that denotes the particular version and operator; its exact meaning is not spelled out, so we do not fill it in here and we recommend checking the intended variant against the information on the box. The exact make-up of the package, the part count and the range of decal schemes are given on the packaging.

The real subject

The He 46 is a single-engined two-seat aircraft of the early 1930s with a wing carried above the fuselage on struts, a fixed undercarriage and open cockpits. It was designed for observation and cooperation with ground units, that is, for tasks that called for a good view downwards and the ability to work from short, unprepared strips. Given the rapid development of aviation in the second half of the 1930s the machine soon became obsolete and moved on to training and auxiliary duties, including night flying. The aircraft also reached other operators outside its country of origin, which explains why it appears in the model trade in several versions with different markings and finishes.

Building and painting tips

On interwar designs the most delicate part of the build is the wing bracing and the undercarriage. Set the struts up dry and glue them only once you have checked the angles, ideally one at a time and with support. It pays to replace the thin plastic struts with styrene strip or stretched sprue, because they are stronger and look finer in 1:72 scale. Open cockpits mean the interior will be visible - the seats, the controls and the frame of the structure are worth finishing before the fuselage is closed. Paint the fabric surfaces with a uniform base and only the faintest hint of ribs; exaggerated contrast looks coarse at this scale. Add the towing cables and antennas right at the end using stretched sprue. With small-series tooling, expect to true up the mating surfaces by hand and to dry-fit as you go.

Who the model is for

  • Anyone interested in interwar aviation and observation aircraft.
  • Modelers with experience of short-run kits.
  • Collectors of 1930s aircraft in 1:72 scale.
  • Builders who enjoy working with bracing and stretched sprue.

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The product name gives a suffix after the type that denotes the version and the operator, but it is not spelled out. Check the intended variant against the box and the enclosed instructions; we do not fill it in, so as not to claim something unverified.

Rather not. The combination of wing bracing, a fixed undercarriage and small-series tooling calls for patience and dry-fitting. A modeler with some experience will find it pleasant work, while a beginner may be needlessly put off.

The part count, any resin or photo-etched parts and the range of decals are stated on the packaging.

Replace the struts with styrene strip or stronger wire and glue them one at a time with support, so that the angles come out right. Rig the cables and antennas from stretched sprue after painting is finished and fix them with a drop of super glue.
