A primer coat is a layer that goes onto the model first, before the actual painting. It unifies a surface made of different materials, so the shade never gets lost or shows through unevenly, and it gives subsequent coats something to hold onto. It also works as a final check of your work: under an even color, scratches, unfilled seams and fingerprints stand out that would easily go unnoticed on an untreated surface. Fixing them at this stage takes a few minutes; once the topcoat is sprayed, fixing them means going back a step.
A black base darkens everything applied over it and suits situations where you want depth and contrast: under dark finishes, under metallic shades, and as the starting layer for a technique that builds up light from the darkest shadow upward. Under light shades, expect to need more coats than over a light base.
Wash and degrease the model before applying it — a primer will not hold on a greasy surface either. Shake the bottle thoroughly, as the pigment settles to the bottom. Choose the thinner, mixing ratio and application method per the manufacturer's instructions on the packaging. Apply in thin coats; a thick coat fills in fine relief and creates steps at the edges. Before you start painting, let the primer cure fully — a fresh coat lifts easily under masking tape. Wash your tools right after use.
For modelers who want to keep painting under control from the start. The 200 ml package is a bulk size, worthwhile for anyone who primes regularly.
Thinner, brushes and an airbrush are not included in the delivery, unless stated otherwise.
