Gunze UG26 Gundam Color, dark blue, gloss

A modeling paint from the Japanese maker Gunze, from the Gundam Color range, intended for mech kits. The shade matches the dark blue surface of the hull of the Nu Gundam robot and is ready mixed so that it does not have to be matched by hand. The surface dries to a gloss. That is deliberate in this range: marking stickers sit better on a gloss surface and surplus panel line wash can be wiped off it without leaving streaks.

What the paint is thinned with and what it is NOT

This is a solvent-based paint of the lacquer type, not a water-thinned acrylic. It is thinned solely with lacquer thinner from the same maker, either the ordinary one or the slow-drying one for the airbrush. Neither water nor acrylic thinner will thin the paint; they will only curdle it. Lacquer also attacks what is underneath, so it must not be applied over enamel or over an acrylic that does not have a cured barrier coat.

Use

• Stir the paint thoroughly before taking any out, as the pigment settles to the bottom.
• For the airbrush, thin with lacquer thinner from the same maker.
• Apply thin coats; the lacquer has good covering power.
• Let the gloss surface cure before you start applying a wash.
