A plastic kit of a cottage in 28 millimeter size, designed to suit the period from roughly the fourteenth to the seventeenth century. That is a wide span and it is deliberate: a simple country building changed very little in the European landscape over the centuries, so one building serves just as well for the late Middle Ages as for the Thirty Years' War. The material is hard plastic on sprues.

What the building is for

Buildings for tabletop games have to stand repeated handling and figures have to fit inside them. Once assembled it forms a solid whole that can be moved around the table. On a diorama a country cottage is a rewarding element, because it gives the scene a human dimension and explains why the fighting is happening here: for the village, for the road, for shelter. The building suits a European landscape from the British Isles to central Europe.

Building and painting tips

• Dry-fit the walls and check the right angles before you apply any glue.
• Apply the primer from a spray can, as the surfaces are large.
• Paint the half-timbering from a dark base, with the infill panels lighter than the timbers.
• Bring out the thatch or the shingles with a dry brush.
