A masking set for the Supermarine Swift FR.5 kit in 1:72 scale, cut for the Airfix kit. Cut masks for the cockpit glazing that replace the slow business of cutting strips of tape.
Responsibility details are not available.
This is not a kit or model parts but a masking set that is simply applied to a part-built model. It replaces the cutting of strips of tape with which the cockpit glazing is protected before spraying. The masks are cut to the shape of the glazing of this aircraft in that scale. The sheet is cut for the Airfix kit; on a model from another maker the glazing has different framing, so the masks need not match.
The parts are lifted out of the sheet, carried with tweezers onto clean, degreased glazing and pressed down. The edges are then gone over once more with the point of a toothpick so that no paint runs under them. Spray thinned paint in thin coats, because a thick layer leaves a step at the edge once the mask comes off. Take the masks off shortly after the paint has dried, while they have not yet baked into the finish, pulling at a shallow angle backwards.
The Supermarine Swift was the first British production fighter with a swept wing and entered service in the middle of the 1950s. The fighter versions did not prove themselves, but the reconnaissance FR.5 with a lengthened nose for cameras served with squadrons in Germany until the early 1960s. Power came from a Rolls-Royce Avon turbojet with an afterburner.
The set contains masks only. The Airfix kit, paints and glue are not included in the package.
