1:48 Lavochkin La-5 - EXPERT Kabuki Masks (for Zvezda 4803 Kit)

1:48 Lavochkin La-5 EXPERT kabuki masks - New Ware NWAM1439, for the Zvezda 4803 kit

A set of masking tapes for the Zvezda 4803 kit - it is not a model, but an aid for painting. EXPERT is the higher of the two levels for this subject: according to the manufacturer it covers the canopy including masks for the inner side, and the wheels. The inner side of the glazing is exactly what the smaller BASIC level does not have - that one covers the canopy from the outside only, and the wheels. The level stands in the designation of the set because it is the main distinction: for the same machine the manufacturer issues the levels as separate items.

The real subject

The Lavochkin La-5 came about in 1942 by rebuilding the LaGG-3 fighter: in place of the inline engine the nose received the air-cooled Shvetsov M-82 radial, which raised the type's performance at a stroke. Early production machines still had a high rear fuselage, so the pilot had poor vision to the rear; the lowered fuselage came only a few weeks later. The structure was largely of wood, which suited Soviet production. For the modeler it matters that the shape of the canopy differs between early and later machines.

Masking and painting tips

The masks are cut from yellow kabuki masking tape. Degrease the part before applying them and press the mask down around its whole edge so that paint does not creep under the rim. Spray in thin coats; a heavy coat likes to peel when the mask comes off. Remove the mask while the paint is still fresh and pull it away at an angle. Cover the areas the set does not reach with tape or with liquid mask.

Who the set is for

• For modelers who want sharp frame edges without cutting tape by hand.
• For builders who object to paint creeping under the mask.
• For those who build the named kit and want to save time on the glazing.

This is an accessory for a model, not a kit. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
