The Bulldog was a two-seat training aircraft with fixed landing gear that grew out of the light civil Beagle Pup type. The military form was worked up by the Beagle company, but that went bankrupt in 1969 and Scottish Aviation at Prestwick finished the production. For full aerobatic clearance the airframe was given a strengthened structure and a higher permitted weight; the instrument panel was deepened. The Royal Air Force used Bulldogs for basic flying training with the university air squadrons, where whole generations of future pilots went through training on them.
