A kit of the Soviet MiG-29 fighter of the first production series, designated 9-12, in the small 1:144 scale. Alongside the injection-molded plastic parts, the box according to a review contains printed parts, a photo-etched fret and canopy masks, so it is a small but well-equipped model rather than a simple toy. The decal sheet offers markings for more than ten Soviet machines of 1991, including aircraft from bases in the former East Germany. The manufacturer is the Ukrainian brand Armory.
The MiG-29 9-12 series is the original production version of the Soviet frontline fighter, which entered service at the beginning of the 1980s. It was given a pair of high-thrust engines, intakes set apart under the wing roots and, besides the radar, an optical head for finding targets by their heat emission. With its agility and its armament of short-range missiles it was among the best of its day. The year 1991 is a turning point for these machines: shortly afterward the aircraft were divided among the successor states and some of them vanished from service.
In 1:144 the parts are small, so it pays to work on a light-colored surface and with tweezers. Glue the plastic with thin polystyrene cement, and the printed and photo-etched parts with super glue. Spray a thin filler primer before painting. The Soviet schemes of the MiG-29 are broken up from several grays; in this scale it is sensible to soften the blends and not to make the outlines too contrasting. Make use of the canopy masks, as the glazing is small and masks badly by hand.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
