About product

MiG-29UB series 9-51 in 1:144, the early years of the Ukrainian Air Force (Armory)

A kit of the two-seat MiG-29UB trainer, series 9-51, in the small 1:144 scale. It is not the single-seat fighter but the two-seat version with a lengthened cockpit for an instructor and a pupil. Besides injection-molded plastic the box, according to a review, holds printed parts, a photo-etched fret and masks for the canopy. The decals are devoted to machines from the first years of the Ukrainian Air Force, that is the period after 1991, when the aircraft still carried the Soviet camouflage scheme and already the Ukrainian insignia. The manufacturer is the Ukrainian brand Armory.

The real subject

The MiG-29UB is the two-seat trainer version of the MiG-29 frontline fighter. The cockpit was widened to two places one behind the other, each with its own canopy, and to make room for it the radar had to give way. The machine therefore kept the flying qualities of a fighter but without the full armament for combat at longer range. After the break-up of the Soviet Union, Ukraine inherited a large fleet of MiG-29s including the two-seaters; in the first years of independence the aircraft only received new insignia and the camouflage stayed as it had been.

Building and painting tips

In 1:144 the parts are tiny, so work with tweezers and a sharp blade. Glue the plastic with thin cement for plastic, and the printed parts and the photo-etch with cyanoacrylate glue. Spray a thin filler primer before painting. The longer glazing of the two-seat cockpit is the most conspicuous part of the model, so it pays to use the enclosed masks and to take your time over a clean frame. Soften the Soviet gray schemes in this scale so that the transitions are not too contrasty.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of aircraft in the small 1:144 scale
  • Modelers interested in the Ukrainian Air Force of the 1990s
  • Builders who also collect the two-seat trainer versions of combat aircraft

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The UB is the two-seat trainer version. The cockpit has two places one behind the other, each with its own canopy, and to make room for it the radar gave way. The flying qualities stayed close to the fighter, the armament for combat at longer range did not.

It is the internal designation of the production version. Series 9-51 is the two-seat MiG-29UB trainer; the single-seat fighters carry the designations 9-12 and 9-13.

According to a review the box holds printed parts, a photo-etched fret, masks for the canopy and decals. Glue and paints are not included in the package.

For the most part they kept the Soviet camouflage and only received new national insignia. For a modeler that means the period gray scheme with new national markings, not the later pixel camouflage.
