About product

MiG-29UB series 9-51, Early years of Ukrainian AF, 1:144 Armory

An injection-molded plastic kit of the two-seat MiG-29UB in 1:144 scale from the Ukrainian brand Armory. The manufacturer adds 3D-printed parts and a photo-etched fret to the plastic, so that fine features such as the intake ducts or the exhaust nozzles are not left to the molding alone. The boxing is marked as set 3 and the decals aim at machines from the first years of the Ukrainian Air Force.

The real subject

The MiG-29UB, internally izdeliye 9-51, is the two-seat combat trainer version of the MiG-29 fighter. The second cockpit took the place of part of the equipment in the nose, which is why the machine has no radar; the raised rear seat lets the instructor see over the pupil's head. The ability to carry armament remained, so the UB was not merely a school aircraft. Ukraine took over an extensive fleet of MiG-29s after the break-up of the Soviet Union, and the machines of the first half of the 1990s still carried the Soviet camouflage scheme with new Ukrainian insignia — this is exactly the period the edition covers.

Building and painting tips

In 1:144 scale the cleanliness of the seams decides the result: sand the fuselage seams down before you fit the small parts. Glue both the photo-etch and the printed parts with cyanoacrylate glue, and the plastic with thin cement for plastic. Spray over a filler primer and lay the camouflage on with an airbrush at low pressure, because the edges of the transitions are fine in this scale. Spray gloss clear coat under the decals and even the surface out with a matte one once it has dried.

Who the model is for

  • For modelers of modern jet aircraft in the small scale.
  • For collectors of Ukrainian and Soviet aviation.
  • For more experienced builders — the 3D-printed parts and the photo-etch call for a different technique than plastic alone.

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It has two cockpits and carries no radar — its place was taken by the front part of the second station. The rear seat is raised for the instructor's view.

According to the manufacturer there are 3D-printed parts and a photo-etched fret. Check the exact parts list and the marking options on the box.

Rather not. The 1:144 scale is tiny and both the photo-etch and the printed parts are glued with cyanoacrylate, that is with a different technique than plastic.

Machines from the first years of the Ukrainian Air Force, that is the period after 1991, when the aircraft still carried the Soviet camouflage with Ukrainian insignia.
