The starter package of the German manufacturer Revell holds, according to the manufacturer, two separate injection-molded plastic kits in 1:144 scale: the Supermarine Spitfire Mk.Ia and the Hawker Hurricane Mk.I. Enclosed with them are basic shades of water-thinnable acrylic paints, brushes, cement for plastic, decals and a multilingual instruction sheet. You will therefore build the pair of aircraft that together defended the British sky in 1940.
The Spitfire Mk.Ia and the Hurricane Mk.I were the two main fighters of British Fighter Command in the Battle of Britain. Both machines were powered by the Rolls-Royce Merlin V12 engine and both carried eight machine guns in the wings. The Spitfire had an all-metal structure with an elliptical wing and was more agile in combat at altitude; the sturdier Hurricane with its tubular frame and fabric-covered rear fuselage was easier to repair, and in 1940 the British deployed it in the greatest numbers.
The 1:144 scale is very small, the part count low and the build quick. Level the joints and any traces of the mold with abrasive paper of the finest grade, because in this scale every irregularity is conspicuous. Apply the upper camouflage pattern with an airbrush or a fine brush onto a smooth filler primer and keep the transitions between the shades soft. The decals settle better on a gloss surface, which is evened out at the end with a matte varnish.
The models are supplied unassembled and unpainted. The basic paints, the brush and the cement are part of this package according to the manufacturer, other accessories are not, unless stated otherwise.
