An injection-molded plastic kit of the racing Mercedes SSKL in 1:32 scale from the German manufacturer Revell. The Model Set edition is conceived as a complete gift package: besides the model itself the manufacturer encloses basic shades of water-thinnable acrylic paints, a brush and a tube of cement for plastic, so the build can start right after unpacking.
The abbreviation SSKL stands for Super Sport Kurz Leicht and denotes the last and sharpest stage of a development line that grew out of the design work of Ferdinand Porsche. Under the long hood worked an inline six-cylinder of over seven liters with a supercharger, and the frame was lightened for weight by extensive drilling. Rudolf Caracciola won the 1931 Mille Miglia with this type as the first non-Italian driver in the history of the race. The car therefore belongs among the icons of prewar motor sport.
The 1:32 scale is small, so separate the parts from the sprue with a sharp knife and level the sprue nubs off with a file. The body is worth spraying with a filler primer first, so that the paint holds and the shapes stand out. Set the rims and the wire spokes of the wheels, the exhausts and the tie-down straps apart with a brush right at the end. A deeper impression of age comes from a dark wash in the engraved lines and a fine misting of a dust shade on the chassis.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. The basic paints, the brush and the cement are part of this package according to the manufacturer, other accessories are not, unless stated otherwise.
