What kind of accessory this is

A chandelier in period style for 1:35 scale, intended for interior dioramas and vignettes. In an enclosed scene it is one of the few things that hang from above, so it immediately reveals that the room has a ceiling and that someone lived in it. At the same time it gives the scene scale and depth, because the eye reads it as a familiar object in space.

Where a chandelier belongs in a scene

It stands out most in a room you can see into: through a broken wall, an open door or a tall window. A scene from a wrecked house is rewarding too, with the chandelier hanging askew above an overturned chair and hinting at what happened there. Hang it so that it is vertical and at a sensible height above the floor; a chandelier set too low will lower the whole room. The chain or rod can be extended with a thin wire, which at the same time takes care of a firm attachment to the ceiling.

Building and painting tips

Cut away surplus material and traces of manufacture with a sharp blade a short distance from the part and sand the area; on thin arms hold the part close to the point of the cut. Before painting, wash it, degrease it and apply a primer. Gilded or brass metal looks better over a dark base with a lighter metallic tone laid on with a dry brush across the edges and the ornament; a thin dark wash goes into the recesses. An old, abandoned interior is recognized by dust and cobwebs, and a fine pigment stippled into the corners of the ornament is enough for that.
