An injection-molded plastic kit of the British improvised armored truck Bedford OY Armadillo Mk. III in 1:35 scale. It was released by the Hong Kong brand Gecko Models, which has long focused on British wheeled equipment of the Second World War. The manufacturer gives photo-etched detail parts and decals for period markings with the kit.
The Armadillo appeared in the spring of 1940, when Britain faced a real threat of an airborne landing after the fall of France and the airfields of the Royal Air Force had nothing to defend them with. The answer was an ordinary three-ton Bedford chassis with an angular fighting body set on top. Its walls were made of two layers of wood with the gap filled with gravel, and the cab was covered with steel plating. The crew worked the weapon from an open space at the rear, and the vehicles served with airfield defense units. The Mk. III version was the most refined of the whole series and was built on the three-ton Bedford chassis.
Start with the frame, the axles and the engine, and close the cab only at the end. The inside of the fighting compartment is hard to paint once it has been glued, so spray it earlier. The wooden armor benefits from an oil patina and careful dry brushing, which brings out the structure of the boards. Dust pigment and a darker wash in the gaps suit the chassis, so that the vehicle does not look new.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
