About product

British A10 cruiser tank in 1:35 scale — Bronco

An injection-molded plastic kit of the British cruiser tank. The double designation in the name is not a mistake: the British carried their vehicles under a development number beginning with the letter A and at the same time under the service designation Cruiser Tank, so the A10 Mk.I corresponds to the Cruiser Tank Mk.II and the A10 Mk.IA corresponds to the Mk.IIA. The abbreviation CS then marks the support version with a howitzer instead of a gun. The maker Bronco Models builds sets with a rich breakdown of parts; the number of parts and the number of marking schemes are not stated by the manufacturer.

The real subject

The A10 came about as a more heavily armored variation on the preceding A9 type, and the British classed it among the cruiser tanks, that is vehicles meant for rapid advance rather than for infantry support. In practice, though, it was too slow for the cruiser role and too lightly armored for the infantry one, so it ended up between two requirements. It was deployed in France in 1940, then in North Africa and on Crete. Instead of a 2-pounder gun the CS support version carried a howitzer and fired mainly smoke rounds, to cover the advance of the other vehicles.

Building and painting tips

Finish the running gear before you close the hull up; on a vehicle with suspension on rollers the running gear is intricate. Assemble and paint the tracks separately. British vehicles of that period wore pronounced multicolor camouflage with hard edges, so masking pays off. After the base coloring give the surfaces a filter, the recesses a wash and the edges chipping; in the North African setting add light dust, in France wet mud instead.

Who the model is for

  • modelers of British Second World War equipment
  • collectors of prewar and early wartime tanks
  • more experienced modelers, because of the running gear
  • builds of the support version with a howitzer

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
