About product

Churchill Mk.III 1:35 — AFV Club

An injection-molded plastic kit of the British Churchill infantry tank in the Mk.III version in 1:35 scale from AFV Club. The Mk.III version was the first form with a welded turret and a 6-pounder gun, that is with armament that could already threaten German tanks.

The real subject

The Churchill was a British infantry tank: a machine with very thick armor and a low top speed, intended to support advancing infantry. It stands out for its exceptionally long running gear with eleven small road wheels on each side and for the track carried high over the whole height of the hull — it was precisely this arrangement that gave it its famous ability to cross very difficult ground and steep gradients. The Mk.III version received a welded turret and a 6-pounder gun. Churchills went into action at Dieppe, in North Africa, in Italy and in northwest Europe, and became the basis for a whole range of engineer conversions.

Building and painting tips

The long running gear with eleven wheels on each side is the most laborious part of a Churchill: assemble it according to the instructions and keep checking that both sides sit at the same height, because with that many wheels an irregularity is easily missed. Finish and paint the inside of the hull and the running gear before you close the hull up; once the tracks are fitted you cannot reach the running gear. On a Churchill the track runs high and the inner face is clearly visible, so do not forget it. British olive paint comes alive with a dark wash and dust on the lower part.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of British armor of the Second World War
  • Modelers of infantry tanks and engineer machines
  • Builders with experience, as the running gear is laborious
  • Diorama builders working on Italy and northwest Europe

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
