A plastic kit of a construction machine in 1:35 scale. The subject is the Hitachi ZC50T-5 tandem vibratory roller, that is civilian equipment, not a military vehicle. According to the manufacturer there are 98 parts in four colors of plastic, decals and one figure of a female operator; the set was released in 2018.
A tandem roller has a steel drum at the front and at the rear and both of them vibrate, so the ground is compacted not only by the weight of the machine but also by the oscillation. That is exactly how higher compaction is reached with a lower machine weight, and that is why rollers like this are used on roads, parking lots, bike paths and backfills, where a heavy static roller would churn the ground up. The ZC50T-5 roller belongs to the lower weight class, where the manufacturer gives an operating weight of around 4100 kilograms and a compaction width of 1300 millimeters. The 1:35 scale, usual for military equipment, is welcome with construction machines: the machine can be placed in a scene with workers and figures from the same scale.
The machine has large smooth surfaces and a striking orange finish, so careful priming and thin coats pay off; a heavy coat would flood the sharp edges of the bodywork. Paint the drums in a steel shade and, once they are dry, give them a dark wash and a light rub with graphite so that they look used. A construction machine does not look convincing without dirt: dried concrete or asphalt grime on the drums, dust on the frame and greasy traces around the hydraulics will do a lot of work for free.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
