M31 US Tank Recovery Vehicle 1:35 is a plastic kit of the American recovery vehicle on the chassis of the M3 tank from Takom.
Responsibility details are not available.
An injection-molded plastic kit in 1:35 scale from Takom capturing the American M31 recovery vehicle. The box states photo-etched parts, link-and-length tracks built in sections including a jig for the correct angle, hatches for the open as well as the closed position and decals for several vehicles.
The M31 came about by converting the M3 medium tank, whose combat career ended with the arrival of the Shermans. The main armament disappeared from the hull and in its place the vehicle received a powerful winch, a lifting boom and equipment for changing powerpacks in the field. A dummy gun stayed in the turret, so from a distance the vehicle did not look like a defenseless target. A locomotive works carried out the conversion and more than eight hundred vehicles were built this way. Crews used them to pull out bogged and damaged equipment, for towing and as an improvised workshop, and they lasted in service until the end of the war.
Finish the running gear first and only then assemble the link-and-length tracks; the jig from the package helps to hold the correct sag. The lifting boom and the winch deserve cleanly sanded joints, because they are the most visible parts of the model. American olive green comes alive if the surfaces are lightened slightly and the edges picked out. On a recovery vehicle heavier weathering is worth the effort: wear on the decks, a wash into the recesses and pigments for dust and mud in the running gear.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
