An injection-molded plastic kit in 1:35 scale from AFV Club capturing the American M548A1 tracked cargo carrier. The box states a detailed interior of the cab and the cargo compartment with a small swiveling crane on a boom and a metal chain, a cargo compartment tarpaulin in two positions, a folding tailgate and an ammunition set for 155 mm and 203 mm weapons. The decals cover the American, British, German and Australian armies.
The M548 is a tracked cargo vehicle derived from the M113 armored personnel carrier family. From the original machine it kept the light alloy hull, the powerpack and the running gear, but instead of carrying infantry it was given an open cargo compartment and a cab for the crew. The result was a carrier that holds several tons of load and gets through where wheeled vehicles bog down. Most often it brought artillery shells straight to the firing positions, and because it came from a widespread family, a number of allied countries used it besides the US Army. The A1 version is a later revision with changes in the powerpack and the electrics.
Finish and paint the cab and the cargo compartment while the parts are still accessible; once the model is closed you will not reach them. The shells and their boxes are better painted separately and put into the vehicle only when they are done. American olive green comes alive if the surface is lightened slightly in the middle of the panels. The cargo compartment is the ideal place for weathering: a wash into the recesses, wear on the edges and pigments for dust and mud in the running gear.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
