A large injection-molded plastic kit of the Soviet 9P117M1 self-propelled launcher with the R-17 short-range ballistic missile of the 9K72 Elbrus missile system, in 1:35 scale from the Chinese brand Trumpeter. The set contains over 1300 parts on nineteen sprues, rubber tires, small photo-etched parts and brass wire. The model is meant to be glued and painted.
The 9K72 Elbrus system consisted of the liquid-fueled short-range R-17 ballistic missile and the eight-wheeled 9P117M1 self-propelled launcher on the MAZ-543 chassis. The launcher carried the missile horizontally, raised it to the vertical at the firing position and launched it, so a single vehicle handled transport, preparation and launch. In the NATO code system the whole family of these missiles is known as Scud; the letter after that name differs between sources, so the unambiguous designations R-17 and 9K72 Elbrus are used instead.
The build is long, so work in sections: first the chassis and drivetrain, then the cab, and the erector with the missile last. Spray the inside of the cab before you close it. Glue the long missile on a flat surface so that it does not end up twisted, and let the joints cure properly. Degrease the rubber tires before painting, otherwise the paint will not hold. Large single-color areas come alive with light shading of the base color and a dark wash in the recesses; dust on the tires and the fenders gives the vehicle weight.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
