The Dodge WC family of light trucks is among the most characteristic American vehicles of the Second World War. The WC63 version is a long-wheelbase six-wheeler with all-wheel drive: unlike the usual 4x4 it has a third axle, and with it a higher payload and better going. The vehicles carried gun crews and cargo and routinely towed light guns, both antitank and antiaircraft. Compared with trucks of the heavier classes they got closer to the front, because they were smaller and more nimble. The WC series also laid the ground for later civilian off-road vehicles.
Assemble the chassis and the axles on a flat surface so that all six wheels stand. Finish and paint the cab and the cargo bed while the parts are accessible. American olive green comes alive if the surfaces are lightened slightly and the edges picked out; dust on the wheels and on the underside of the chassis and wear on the bumper and the steps will then bring the vehicle to life. Paired with an artillery piece or with a load on the bed it stands out more than on its own.
