A plastic kit in 1:350 scale from the brand Takom. The real subject is the German Sachsen-class frigate, that is the F124 type intended above all for the air defense of a task force. The package is described as three in one, so more than one form of the ship can be built from it. The kit is supplied unassembled and unpainted.
The Sachsen-class frigates came about at the turn of the millennium as an answer to the need to protect a task force against air attack. They carry a vertical launching system for surface-to-air missiles and a powerful radar with fixed arrays on the superstructure, which can track a large number of targets at once. The hull and the superstructure are shaped so as to limit radar reflectivity, which makes them among the first German ships built with low observability in mind.
Decide right at the start which version you are building, because the differences tend to lie in the details of the superstructure and the armament and are hard to change once things are glued. The large flat areas of the superstructure call for a smooth finish, so sand the joints carefully and spray in thin coats. Modern gray is worth shading: the upper surfaces a little lighter, the sides darker. The surface of the water on a base can be made from modeling resin.
